We have been endeavouring during the past year to collect any information as to the early history of our grand- parents, Humphrey A. and Ellen Lucas White. For the dates, etc., we are indebted to Mrs. Sarah Atkinson. the eldest daughter now living.

Grandfather White was born in November, 1797, in the town of Newtonstewart, County Tyrone, Ireland. He was of Scotch descent, and a man possessed of a true and loyal nature, his ancestors being engaged in many battles, also suffering under the oppression of the Roman Catholics. One uncle was shot on his own doorstep when coming forth to celebrate with the Orangemen on the 12th of July. Two more were killed in the battle of Waterloo, another one in the retreat of the battle of Madrid.

After receiving his education he learned the trade of shoemaker, and could for many years take pride in a well-built boot, especially for his own feet, as he was the proud possessor of a very small, well-shaped foot.

He was united in marriage to Ellen Lucas White, who was born near Newtonstewart, Ireland, in August, 1807, and was of English and German descent. She was also strongly allied to the Orange order, her father coming to Ireland with William the Third, at the time of the Battle of the Boyne. A verse of poetry she would often repeat was this:

"When William First of England came The king of it to be. He brought the branch along with him.

We called the Crange tree."

In the year 1853 they left Ireland for America, as many were doing, to make a new home for their family. Two sons, John and William, had preceded them, and had written glowing acounts of the new world. The journey took nine weeks in a sailing vessel, where they endured the hardships and discomforts of the long and tedious trip. Their destination was in the county of York, at what was then known as Victoria Square. near Toronto.
